The Oxford English Dictionary has a mistake which is hidden since 1911. A physics professor working at queensland university of technology discovered this mistake while he was writing a paper on how siphons work. The word ‘Siphon’ is 99 years old.
According to the ‘Herald Sun’, the Oxford English dictionary had incorrectly stated that atmospheric pressure is the force in a siphon when it is actually gravity. Siphons are commonly used to empty containers like petrol tanks.
Oxford Dictionary spokeswoman Margot Charlton said the definition was written by the editors who were not scientists.
